Dangerous Magic (Mr. Darcy’s Magic)

Dangerous Magic is a fantasy variation on Pride and Prejudice, set in a world where England is under attack by Napoleon’s mages. The Royal Mages take Elizabeth Bennet from Longbourn to force her to marry the powerful mage Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth is what is known as a Janus Mage, and only by bonding with her Janus Twin, Darcy, will the two of them be powerful enough to defeat Napoleon. Things go terribly wrong when Elizabeth arrives at the Royal Mages’ hall. Not only do she and Darcy dislike each other at first sight, but their magic doesn’t work in the other’s presence. Will the two of them be able to form a bond before the battle?

This book won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I found it delightful. I enjoyed the Regency magical world Fairview has created. Elizabeth and Darcy are recognizably Jane Austen’s characters, and the book includes some of Austen’s most famous lines, but in a different context. The conflict between True-blood mages like Darcy and low-born but talented mages like Elizabeth will remind the reader of the Pureblood-Mudblood conflict in the Harry Potter series. This, the first in a series, will certainly appeal to Harry Potter fans.
