A Plague of Serpents (Daniel Pursglove)
The year is 1608, three years after the Gunpowder Plot. The plague which had seemed to be subsiding is returning, spreading panic and fear through London. The enemies of the king have regrouped and are preparing another attempt on his life. Two separate groups are in an advanced state of planning. Both of them, deadly rivals, have a secret weapon – Daniel Pursglove, agent for the king. In many ways this is fortunate for Daniel, as he has been given a final chance to smash the plots or face execution for a series of charges brought by his enemies. Both groups of conspirators have charged Daniel with killing the king, or they will offer him up for arrest. Daniel is a very resourceful agent, but how is he going to get out of this mess alive?
This is the fourth in the highly successful Daniel Pursglove series, and as with the previous books, it offers a complex, fast-moving plot, well-developed and convincing characters, and a background which brings the early 17th century vividly to life. Highly entertaining, suspenseful and exciting, the book gallops along to a denouement which this reader finished with a sigh of pleasure, tinged with sadness that the series has come to an end. The book can be read on its own, but if you haven’t read the other books I recommend you do so. Highly recommended.
