Historical Novel Society New Novel Award 2018 – £2,000 Prize

Deadline: 31st December 2017

We are delighted to announce our latest award, and the intention that from now on it will become an annual prize. As usual there is a valuable cash prize of £2000 (or an equivalent sum in USD). As usual we have an expert team of readers, and will appoint an eminent independent judge. The competition is for a completed novel that has not been accepted for publication by a traditional publishing house. In the first instance only the opening 5000 words of the novel will be assessed, and so manuscripts do not need to be complete at the time of entry. Shortlisted authors, however, must submit a full manuscript.

I wish you would make this also available to short fiction writers. Why not “novel or short story collection”?

I don’t tgink it would be possible to judge a 5,000 word short story against the 5,000 word opening to a novel – different things (usually) are required. We will run a separate short story competition.

Hi – can you clarify the word count for the New Novel Award 2018 please. Both 5000 and 3000 words are mentioned in the submission and eligibility sections of conditions of entry.
    Thank you.

Up to 5,000 words. Apologies that we were in two minds about this!

    Why not indie published books?

It’s a rights thing – if you retain the rights and are indie published within the timeframe you are eligible.
