Kathleen Ernst

About me

Kathleen Ernst is a novelist, social historian, and educator who writes historical fiction and mysteries for adults and kids.

Her twenty-five books include five historical fiction books for young readers about the American Civil War, including “Hearts Of Stone,” an HNS Editor’s Choice, and fifteen historical novels for American Girl, including seven about Caroline Abbott that are set during the War of 1812.

Kathleen also writes the Chloe Ellefson Historic Sites mysteries for adults. While not historical novels, these books are set at historic sites during the 1980’s and include mysteries from the 1800’s.

Kathleen’s other publications include “Too Afraid To Cry,” a non-fiction history book about the American Civil War, and numerous poems and video scripts. Her work has received multiple Edgar and Agatha nominations, and an Emmy for children’s educational programming.

Kathleen has a Masters Degree in History Education and Writing from Antioch University.
