Charles Fergus published the novel “Shadowcatcher” (Soho) in 1991, based on the real-life 1913 Rodman Wanamaker Expedition of Citizenship to the North American Indian. He has also published 16 nonfiction books, most of them about nature.
His history/mystery, set in backcountry Pennsylvania in 1835, will be published in 2019 by Skyhorse Press. “A Stranger Here Below” takes its title from a shape-note hymn, a music form popular in the early 1800s. The novel is the first in a planned series whose main character, Gideon Stoltz, is a young Pennsylvania German who is neither trusted nor liked by the Scotch-Irish denizens of the county where he has stumbled into the job of sheriff.
