White Christmas
This story is about Roz, who is a Kindertransport refugee who is relocated to Liverpool to be safe from the threat of Nazi occupation. She does not know what happened to her parents, as they were heading to freedom when their car crashed, and she found herself alone in a hostile country and transported onto the train that saved thousands of children before Europe was locked down in war. She quickly makes friends with refugees Felix and Adele, and they are boarding together until they are hosted by families who will look after them. Roz and Felix begin to feel something when Roz is whisked away by a Liverpudlian family whose morals are non-existent. Throughout this novel Roz and Felix are separated by various events and people, and the reader is encouraged to live with them through their struggles over the years.
The novel spans several years, so it is sometimes hard to keep track of events, but it is written capably so it flows into the next section and part of the protagonist’s life. It is researched well in all the areas that the protagonist visits so you can get a glimpse of wartime Britain. Overall, it is a heart-warming book that makes you want to root for the main characters all the way.
