This Thomas Chaloner mystery takes place in London in the spring of 1664. Chaloner has been summoned from Tangier back to London by his master the Earl of Clarendon who is building a grand mansion on Piccadilly The Earl is missing bricks and wood from his site and he expects Chaloner to find and stop the thieves. This assignment is in addition to finding the man who is threatening to assassinate the Earl’s architect and also to expose the person who has infiltrated Queen Katherine’s private boudoir and planted incriminating letters. In his investigations Chaloner runs afoul of two competing trading companies, one in which King Charles has a vested interest .
