The Last Mughal: The Fall of a Dynasty, Delhi 1857

By

This engrossing book is one of Dalrymple’s best. The Indian Mutiny/War for Independence is still a controversial subject. Dalrymple avoids both overly simple explanations and too-convoluted theories as he discusses the causes and results of the events of 1857. His research into the story of Bahadur Shah Zafar II, the last of the Mughal emperors, led him to the discovery of a treasure trove of previously unexamined material. Using original eyewitness accounts and Delhi court records, Dalrymple presents the reader with a full and fair account of the tragic Siege of Delhi. He brings the many people involved to vivid life, and makes understandable events that changed both England and India forever. Clear a weekend for this book, because once you start reading it’s very hard to put it down.
