Blood for Blood
The Battle of Worcester provides the breeding ground for this Civil War tale of bloody revenge. Blood for Blood is a well-written and well-researched account of how the divisions of government filtered down to split friendships and families at this time, leading to dire consequences. With the Roundheads taking power and encouraging post-conflict religious and political fervour, it provides the perfect guise within which to settle scores. Blaming the Royalist, Daniel Davenport wholly for the deaths of those he held most dear, Manfred Hugo sets out to destroy Daniel via his newly won position of authority as a commissioner of the major-generals. With Daniel locked away in Fisherton Anger Gaol, there seems little hope of saving his sister, Johanna, from Manfred’s trumped-up charge of witchcraft.
Despite this not being a particularly original story of the English Civil War, and some of the plot being somewhat contrived and unconvincing, it is still an entertaining and compelling read.
